Hoeven Welcomes Taiwan Border Opening To US Beef
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today welcomed an announcement by the Taiwanese government Thursday that the Asian country will partially reopen its market to U.S. beef products beginning April 16, 2005. Under the agreement, beef from American cattle less than 30 months of age with the removal of certain parts will be accepted for export to Taiwan. Taiwan is the sixth largest importer of U.S. beef.
“Taiwanese officials have made a good start in recognizing the safety and quality of U.S. beef,” Hoeven said. “This should help assure other Asian nations, like Japan and South Korea, that we have strong measures in place to ensure the safety of American beef and that they too should open their borders. We will continue to push for acceptance of our beef overseas based on sound science and good ranching practices.”
The Governor last year organized a trade mission led by Lt. Governor Jack Dalrymple to Taiwan. Dalrymple and senior officials, along with North Dakota rancher Gene Harris, met in Taipei with senior Taiwanese food and health agency officials. Hoeven’s office has also met regularly with senior agriculture and health officials in Washington, D.C. in an effort to expedite the opening of the market to U.S. beef.
