Hoeven Directs Flags Lowered In Honor Of Pope John Paul II
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven, in accordance with a directive from President George W. Bush, has ordered all North Dakota and U.S. flags flown at half staff today, Sunday, April 3, 2005, in honor of Pope John Paul II, who passed away Saturday. Flags will remain at half-staff at the Capitol and all other public buildings and grounds until sunset on the day of the pontiff’s interment.
On Saturday, April 02, 2005, Gov. Hoeven issued the following statement:
“Today, people of all nationalities, all faiths, and all denominations join to mourn the passing of one of the great moral figures of our time. No matter what the issue - be it war and peace, the tyranny of communism, the sanctity of life, or our moral obligation to the poor and oppressed - Pope John Paul II articulated a clear and uncompromising vision of what he believed to be right and just. More importantly, he lived what he believed, enduring his own burdens with enormous integrity and humility.
“With his passing, a great light leaves the world, a light that has served as a beacon of moral guidance for billions of Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Confident that he is with God, First Lady Mikey and I express our deepest condolences to Roman Catholics and people of faith everywhere. We join them in prayer as we reflect upon the loss of a great human being and a great spiritual example.”
