Hoeven Announces 2005 National Youth Science Camp Representatives
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today announced that Xiaowen Li, a senior at Fargo North High School, and Michelle Tigges, a senior at Fargo South High School, have been selected by the Coalition for Conservation and Environmental Education as two of the state’s most promising young scientific leaders. They will represent North Dakota as delegates at the National Youth Science Camp in Charleston, W.Va., this summer.
“Xiaowen and Michelle represent North Dakota’s promising young scientists and future leaders,” Hoeven said. “This camp will provide them with a unique opportunity to exchange ideas with academic and corporate professionals and explore new areas in biological and physical sciences, broadening their knowledge and interest in science and the environment.”
Li plans to pursue a career in chemical, environmental, operations research or financial engineering. She is a National Merit Scholar, North Dakota Scholar, member of the National Honor Society, and member of the American Math State Honor Roll. She is active in the Science Olympiad and Tri-college Math Contest, and serves as president of the school’s environmental club.
Tigges’ future plans include scientific research and developments, particularly in the area of genetics. She is a member of the National Honor Society, an AP Scholar with Honor and a member of the Academic “A” Honor Roll. She has received numerous regional and state honors in the Science Olympiad.
Each year, 102 student delegates - two from each state and the District of Columbia - are invited to participate in the National Youth Science Camp. The four-week forum allows delegates an opportunity to exchange ideas with leading scientists and other professionals from the academic and corporate worlds. Li and Tigges were selected from several student applicants from across North Dakota.
