Hoeven: Amtrak Funding Needs To Be Restored

BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven Monday called on California Rep. Jerry Lewis, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, to retain funding for Amtrak rail service across the northern plains. Last week a U.S. House of Representative appropriations subcommittee moved to cut Amtrak's funding to $550 million, about half last year's level and roughly a third of the $1.8 billion Amtrak requested for the upcoming fiscal year.

"Amtrak service, and the Empire Builder line especially, is a vital component to an integrated transportation system that serves as an economic lifeline to America's heartland," Hoeven said "In addition, it provides a necessary and economical alternative for the citizens of America who elect to travel by rail."

Hoeven said ridership in North Dakota was up nearly 8 percent, and in Minnesota, it was up more than 8 percent, underscoring the importance of adequate funding.

"Amtrak fills a unique role for midwestern rural residents, connecting Chicago to Seattle and points west," Hoeven said. "We must assure service to the citizens of those states and communities along this important route that have come to depend on reliable and affordable rail transportation."
