Hoeven Issues Emergency Declaration For Assistance Provided To Katrina Victims
BISMARCK , N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today issued an emergency declaration enabling the state to access funds pending federal reimbursement for aid to victims of Hurricane Katrina. The move allows expenditures for state agency and National Guard relief efforts, and in addition, enables the state to seek a Presidential Disaster Declaration in North Dakota, as have other states helping victims of Hurricane Katrina.
“We’re committed to doing all we can for the hurricane victims, both in the Gulf and here at home for victims of Hurricane Katrina,” Hoeven said.
Hoeven has already deployed members of the North Dakota National Guard’s 119th Civil Engineer Squadron to Gulfport, Miss. to restore electrical service, provide clean drinking water, establish or repair plumbing and provide other service. The 136th Quartermasters departed for Shelby, Miss. to furnish water purification services to hurricane victims.
In addition, Hoeven has offered through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) to house hurricane evacuees in North Dakota. Under the plan, the state would use Fargo’s 119th Fighter Wing Base in Fargo and Camp Grafton in Devils Lake as staging areas for hurricane victims. From those sites, evacuees would be transported to approximately 1,500 housing units throughout the state. The housing can accommodate a minimum of 3,000 people.
EMAC is a national agreement among states that provides emergency services to victims of disaster in a member state.
