Hoeven Announces Justice Dept. Grants For Drug Courts, Tribal Courts, Domestic Violence Victim Housing
BISMARCK , N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today announced three U.S. Justice Department awards totaling $568,000 in support of North Dakota Drug Courts, tribal courts and housing for victims of abuse and domestic violence.
"These grants will help us to advance programs that help to keep North Dakotans safe and help non-violent offenders recover their lives and become contributing members of society," Hoeven said. "We're grateful to the Department of Justice for helping us to sustain and enhance all of these efforts."
The Three Affiliated Tribes of Fort Berthold Reservation will receive $340,950 to support the development, implementation, enhancement and continuing operation of the tribal justice system. The funds will be used to develop a fully staffed and properly trained probation department for the Fort Berthold District Court. No adult probation services currently exist.
The Abused Adult Resource Center will receive $175,000 for transitional housing assistance for victims of domestic violence and their children. All local efforts funded by the Transitional Housing Assistance Program are victim-oriented transitional housing services that move individuals into permanent housing. Grants may also be used for local projects that provide short-term housing assistance, including rental or utilities payments, and assistance with related expenses, as well as support services designed to enable individuals who are fleeing a situation of domestic violence to locate and secure permanent housing.
The North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation will receive $52,082 to assist state, local and Indian Tribal governments to establish drug courts for adult and juvenile drug offenders. The program provides an alternative to incarcerations and tools for non-violent drug and alcohol offenders to redeem their lives. This grant will support the East Central Judicial District Drug Court Program enhance resources or improve services by increasing the frequency and randomization of drug and alcohol testing.
