Hoeven Announces Department Of Justice Grants

BISMARCK , N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today announced the U.S. Department of Justice has awarded more than $780,000 in grants to the University of North Dakota, the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, the Dakota Boys Ranch Association and the Office of the Attorney General to help establish and expand justice assistance programs in the state.

"Even though North Dakota is the safest state in the nation, it is still important for us to remain vigilant in our efforts to protect our citizens," Hoeven said. "This funding will enable us to expand existing programs and establish new ones so that we can continue to keep our communities safe."

  • The University of North Dakota in Grand Forks has been awarded a Bureau of Justice Assistance grant in the amount of $147,624 to expand the university's American Indians Into Law Program to include more scholarships for Indian students and enhanced outreach programs.
  • The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa in Belcourt has been awarded a $54,306 grant through the department's Tribal Victim Assistance Continuation program to enhance and expand the availability of direct services to victims of abuse and violent crime.
  • The Dakota Boys Ranch Association in Minot has been awarded a grant through the department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in the amount of $493,322 to establish a Transition to Community Mentoring Program to help 50 youth transition from residential care to the community.
  • The Office of the Attorney General has been awarded two grants through the National Institute of Justice totaling more than $86,000 to improve laboratory infrastructure and analysis capacity for DNA samples, and to analyze backlogged forensic DNA casework samples.
