Hoeven Statement On The Death Of Duane "Pappy" Larson
BISMARCK , N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven issued the following statement in response to news of the death of Duane "Pappy" Larson:
"Pappy Larson was the embodiment of the North Dakota spirit. His courage under fire, generosity of spirit and military leadership represented the best traits of his native North Dakota. His missions over Europe as a fighter pilot during World War II and his many years of service in both the Reserves and National Guard earned him the rank of brigadier general, as well as the respect and admiration of every generation of North Dakotans since.
"It was during his tenure with the 119th Fighter Wing that the North Dakota Air National Guard unit acquired the nickname "Happy Hooligans," a title now famous not just in North Dakota, but across the nation. At the same time, as the squadron's commander and most seasoned pilot, he became known simply and affectionately as "Pappy."
"Mikey and I join all North Dakotans today in mourning and saluting this legendary North Dakotan. It is said that a man is not dead until he is forgotten. North Dakota will never forget Duane "Pappy" Larson" and his contribution to his state and his country."
