Hoeven: State to Maintain Heating Assistance Eligibility Levels Through November
BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. John Hoeven today directed the state Department of Human Services to provide home heating fuel assistance under the original eligibility levels for the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) through November, pending additional federal funding. At this point, Congress has not yet provided additional funding to maintain program eligibility with higher fuel costs, but Hoeven said he believes there is support in both the Administration and Congress to do so.
“LIHEAP has always been a 100 percent federal responsibility, and we believe the Administration and Congress will step up to fund it,” Hoeven said. “Meanwhile, we will work within our budget to maintain the original eligibility levels. At the same time, we will continue to work with the administration, Congress and private utility companies to provide additional assistance so that we can help our citizens meet their needs this year.”
