Hoeven: Happy Birthday North Dakota!
BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. John Hoeven today wished North Dakota a happy 116th birthday and encouraged citizens to commemorate the day in 1889 when North Dakota became the 39th state of the Union.
"On this special day, we honor the generations of North Dakotans who contributed so much to our statehood and to the success and growth of our state over the past 116 years," Hoeven said. "The rich heritage and proud traditions of our past continue to define new generations of North Dakotans and provide the foundation for the great work we are doing today to move our state forward."
On November 2, 1889, North Dakota was admitted to the Union when President Benjamin Harrison signed the Proclamation of Admission. South Dakota, Montana and Washington were also admitted on that day. The process towards statehood began on February 22, 1889, when President Grover Cleveland signed the Enabling Act. Then, on October 1 of that year, North Dakota's voters approved the state's new constitution.
