Governor And First Lady To Honor Veterans And North Dakota Military
Hoeven Proclaims "Veterans Awareness Week"
BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. John Hoeven and First Lady Mikey Hoeven will honor North Dakota's veterans and service men and women on Veterans Day, November 11, at a service dedicating the new Purple Heart Memorial at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial ceremony beginning at 10:30 a.m. Both events will be held at the All Veterans Memorial on the State Capitol Grounds in Bismarck.
"Freedom isn't free, and by dedicating the new Purple Heart Memorial on Veterans Day, we are reminded of the price that has been paid and continues to be paid to protect the very ideals that are the foundation of our state and nation," Gov. Hoeven said. "The willingness of America's veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting respect and gratitude."
The Governor proclaimed this week "Veterans Awareness Week" in North Dakota to complement Veterans Day by educating as well as commemorating. According to Gov. Hoeven, the success of the all-volunteer Armed Forces and advances in military technology have reduced the number of individuals and families with personal connections to the military, decreasing awareness about the nature and importance of the accomplishments made by veterans and military personnel.
"Today's military is more streamlined than it was during World War II, for example, with fewer families having loved ones or friends serving in the Armed Forces," Gov. Hoeven said. "It is important for us to educate our citizens, especially our young people, about the significant contributions our veterans and those currently serving have made to preserve the freedoms we enjoy every day. We must never forget the individual sacrifices that were made on our behalf."
