Hoeven Announces 2005-06 Governor's Band And Chorus

BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. John Hoeven today announced that the Lisbon High School Band and the Shanley High School Concert Chorale have been selected the 2005-06 Governor’s Official State Band and Chorus.

“The Lisbon High School Band and the Shanley High School Concert Chorale are two very impressive organizations that will represent the state of North Dakota with pride and enthusiasm,” Hoeven said. “As Governor’s Band and Chorus, they are a testament to the incredible musical talent that exists in schools and communities across our state.”

The Lisbon High School Band is a 65-member ensemble directed by John Monilaws. In addition to three formal concerts a year, the band performs at events throughout the community, including the senior citizens club, and the local hospital and nursing home. The band routinely marches in community parades, and this fall, presented a special Homecoming half-time show complete with dancing, baton and flag routines, and fireworks. Band members recently performed at Vandercook University in Chicago, where they received musicianship honors.

Fargo’s Shanley High School Concert Chorale, under the direction of Rebecca Raber, is comprised of 66 students from grades 9-12. The choir performs at several events in the Fargo-Moorhead area, and has toured in major cities across the country, including Chicago, San Francisco and New York. Choir members have sung in unique venues such as a San Francisco soup kitchen, a subway station and a televised south-Chicago gospel church service. This fall, the chorale was invited as the featured choir at the North Dakota State University Choral Festival.

The Governor’s Band and Chorus were selected from applications submitted by school and civic groups from across the state based on musical talent, achievement and community involvement. The band and chorus may be invited by the Governor to perform at official state functions held throughout the year.
