Governor Appoints Collin To Represent State On Lincoln Bicentennial Commission

BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven today announced his appointment of Rick Collin of Bismarck as North Dakota's representative on the Governors' Council of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.

The first meeting of the Governors' Council will take place Feb. 13 at the Library of Congress in Washington, D. C. On Feb. 12, 2009, the nation will celebrate the 200th birthday of Lincoln. Official bicentennial celebrations will run from Feb. 12, 2008 to Feb. 12, 2010.

The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission was created by Congress to coordinate the national observance of the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth, and to emphasize his contributions to the American ideals of freedom, democracy and equal opportunity for all.

"Rick has a deep and active interest in history, especially U.S. presidents, and this position will give him the opportunity to use that knowledge to help the state observe this bicentennial for one of our nation's greatest presidents," Hoeven said.

Collin, 50, has been Communications Director of the state's history agency, the State Historical Society of North Dakota, since 1995. He also teaches a course on the American Presidency at the University of Mary in Bismarck. He is on the board of the North Dakota Humanities Council. Collin earned a bachelor of arts degree in History from the University of Maryland in 1977, and a master of science degree in Space Studies from the University of North Dakota in 1991.

On a national level, the Commission is planning several major initiatives, including the rededication of the Lincoln Memorial, the redesign of the Lincoln penny, a televised Lincoln documentary, a national traveling exhibit and educational materials for schools.
