Dalrymple, Jaeger Dedicate State's Largest Great Seal
BISMARCK, N.D. - Lt. Governor Jack Dalrymple and Secretary of State Al Jaeger today took part in a dedication and unveiling ceremony for the state's largest Great Seal. The new seal is a relief metal casting six feet in diameter that weighs over 400 pounds. It appears on the State Capitol's Belgium black marble wall in the Memorial Hall.
"As Chairman of the Capitol Grounds Planning Commission I am proud to have been a part of this great project," Dalrymple said. "The new seal will greet thousands of visitors from across the country and around the world who tour our Capitol building every year."
The Great Seal project was the work of the Capitol Grounds Planning Commission, with the help of Secretary of State Al Jaeger. The Commission advises the director of the Office of Management and Budget and the Legislative Council on matters relating to the physical and aesthetic features of the interior and exterior of all buildings on the Capitol grounds.
The Commission consists of the Lieutenant Governor as chairman and eight other members including two citizens, one licensed architect, one representative from the State Historical Society, two members of the state Senate and two members of the state House of Representatives.
"As custodian of the state's only protected symbol, I am very pleased," said Jaeger. "The Great Seal is a work of art and adds grandeur and hallowed dignity to the already striking Memorial Hall."
The date of the unveiling was chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the establishment of the Enabling Act on February 22, 1889. The Enabling Act allowed residents of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Washington to organize governments and gain admission to the Union as states.
