Hoeven Statement On U.S. Senate Passage Of Agriculture Disaster Aid Funding
BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. John Hoeven issued the following statement today in response to the U.S. Senate's passage of an emergency supplemental appropriations bill, which includes disaster aid funding for agriculture:
"We welcome passage of agriculture disaster aid funding in the U.S. Senate. This bipartisan success underscores the broad support our farmers and ranchers have across the nation."
"While we were in Washington, D.C. last week, we met with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns, as well as leadership in the U.S. House and Senate, including Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee Saxby Chambliss, and Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee Bob Goodlatte. We impressed upon them the importance of ad hoc disaster assistance for our producers, who suffered losses last year due to flooding, drought and excess rain. In addition, we testified before the U.S. House Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management, urging lawmakers to make improvements to crop insurance and coordinate those improvements with the reauthorization of the farm bill."
"Although today's vote was encouraging, it is clear that much work remains to be done. Final passage of this funding will depend on winning support in conference committee, where House and Senate members will work to finalize the bill. We are committed to continuing our effort with both Congress and the White House to bring assistance to North Dakota farmers and ranchers who have been impacted with crop losses."
