Hoeven Appoints Murphy, Andrews, Rogers To Board Of Higher Education
BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. John Hoeven today appointed three members to the State Board of Higher Education. Charles W. Murphy of Fort Yates and Susan Andrews of Mapleton have been named to four-year terms, and student member Nicholas Rogers of Grand Forks has been named to a one-year term. This is Andrews second term of service on the board.
“These members bring a broad range of skills, talents and experience to the board,” Hoeven said. “Their backgrounds, as well as their interests in education and other important civic activities, demonstrate a real commitment to a strong and effective North Dakota University System.”
Charles W. Murphy served five, two-year terms as chairman and chief executive officer of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe between 1983 and 1993, and another four terms between 1996 and 2005. During those periods, he also served as chairman of the board for Standing Rock College (Sitting Bull College); United Tribes Technical College; the United Sioux Tribes; and the Tribal Chairman Association.
As chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux, he had full responsibility for the operations of the tribal government, including management of social service programs, human resources management, community health, economic development, and early childhood and youth programs. He also served two, two-year terms as a tribal councilman, where he represented tribal members on matters of education, health and social programs.
Susan Andrews, who is currently serving her first term on the board, is the executive director of the Young Men’s Christian Association, a position she has held since 1985. She previously served as director of development for the Center for Parents and Children. In addition to her professional work with youth, she has served on more than 20 boards, commissions and public service organizations, including the F-M Area Foundation; the North Dakota Education Fact Finding Commission; the Fargo Public Schools Foundation; the Fargo Board of Education; and the NDSU Commission on Alcohol and Other Drugs. Andrews has attended the University of North Dakota and North Dakota State University, from which she holds a bachelor’s degree.
Nicholas Rogers, whom Hoeven has appointed as the student member, is pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree at North Dakota State University. He has been active in the North Dakota Student Association (NDSA), where he currently serves as vice president. He has, in addition, served the organization as student senator and chairman of the State and Legislative Affairs Committee.
He also served as a student senator of the North Dakota State University Student Senate and as a member of the Government Relations and Intercollegiate Affairs Commission and Finance Commission. He has volunteered with Project Hero, which recycles medical supplies for use by low-income families and third-world countries, and Cass County Public Health, where he used his knowledge of pharmacy to assist seniors with enrollment in the new Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit Program.
Rogers is the recipient of several awards and honors, including a Presidential Scholarship; athletic scholarship; NDSA Most Valuable Delegate award; and NDSA Hardest Working Delegate award.
