Hoeven Encourages North Dakotans To Observe Flag Day
BISMARCK, N.D. – In accordance with a proclamation signed by President George W. Bush, Gov. John Hoeven has proclaimed Wednesday, June 14, Flag Day in the state of North Dakota. The Governor has asked government agencies and all citizens to observe the day by displaying the American flag and honoring the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed to defend this nation and advance peace and freedom around the world, and those who continue that mission in service to our country.
“In 1777, Old Glory was established as the official flag of a young nation, designed to represent America’s strength, unity and liberty,” Hoeven said. “We celebrate this enduring American symbol and the hope and ideals that it embodies. By doing so, we honor those who carry our flag into battle to keep America safe and to ensure that the many blessings of our great country continue for generations to come. We pray for all of our soldiers and veterans, those we have lost and those who serve so bravely today.”
In addition, Hoeven encouraged North Dakotans to observe the President’s request and a Congressional resolution to set aside the days from Flag Day through Independence Day as a time to honor America, to celebrate this nation’s rich heritage in public gatherings and activities, and to publicly recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
To commemorate the adoption of America’s flag, Congress passed a joint resolution on August 3, 1949, designating June 14 of each year as Flag Day and requesting that the President issue a proclamation calling for its observance and for the display of the flag of the United States.
