Hoeven Proclaims Storm Emergency For Coleharbor
BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. John Hoeven today proclaimed a severe summer weather emergency for the city of Coleharbor in McLean County. This emergency declaration is based on damages to the city and surrounding area caused by a microburst with straight line winds of up to 100 miles per hour, which downed power lines, leveled buildings, overturned automobiles, and blew grain bins off their foundations.
“Individual and family safety, as well as continued business operations, are our first priority as we continue to rebuild after this storm.” Hoeven said. The Governor, along with his chief of staff and the superintendent of the N.D. Highway Patrol, met with local officials and assessed the damage Thursday morning.
The emergency declaration triggers the North Dakota State Emergency Operations Plan to respond to the situation, assist local officials, alleviate hardships and implement appropriate recovery actions.
State agencies have been providing resources to the Coleharbor area since the storm hit on Wednesday evening. Currently, the N.D. Highway Patrol is assisting with public safety and traffic control. The N.D. Department of Transportation is assisting with clearing debris. N.D. Department of Human Services is coordinating relief efforts through the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross. The State Electrical Board is coordinating with local power cooperatives providing service to the surrounding area. The N.D. Department of Emergency Services is coordinating additional state resources as needed.
