BISMARCK, N.D. - In accordance with a proclamation signed by President George W. Bush, Gov. John Hoeven has declared September 11 as Patriot Day in the state to mark the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks carried out against this nation on September 11, 2001.

Hoeven is directing all government agencies to fly the American and North Dakota flags at half staff from sunrise to sunset on Monday, September 11. He is also encouraging North Dakotans to observe Patriot Day with appropriate ceremonies, activities and remembrance services, to display the flags at half staff from their homes, and to observe a moment of silence at 9:06 CDT to honor the innocent lives lost on that day.

“As we prepare to mark the fifth anniversary of this solemn and defining moment in our nation’s history, we remember the thousands of lives that were lost, and the innocent men, women and children forever changed by these acts of terror,” Hoeven said. “On Patriot Day, we honor the heroism of the police officers, firefighters, rescue personnel, members of the military, and private citizens who demonstrated incredible courage and risked their lives to save their fellow citizens. We also pray for our brave men and women in uniform who are serving at home and abroad to defend this nation and advance the cause of peace around the world.”

In addition to Patriot Day on Monday, the Governor is encouraging North Dakotans to observe Friday through Sunday, September 8-10, as Days of Prayer and Remembrance, as proclaimed by President George W. Bush, to honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and to pray for the families and friends who continue to grieve the loss of their loved ones.

Hoeven will commemorate the fifth anniversary of September 11 by attending a remembrance ceremony on the University of North Dakota campus at 11 a.m. on Monday. Lt. Gov. Jack Dalrymple will attend a memorial service on that same day at the International Peace Garden, beginning at 11 a.m.
