Hoeven, Qwest Foundation Announce Grants For Techonology In The Classroom

BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven and the Qwest Foundation today announced the availability of grants for teachers who use technology in the classroom in innovative ways. A total of $25,000 will be awarded in $2,500 grants to ten teachers in North Dakota schools. The grant program will be administered by the North Dakota Educational Technology Council. The ND LEAD Center will serve as the fiscal agent.

The purpose of the Qwest Classroom Technology Grant Program is to recognize North Dakota public school teachers who are using technology in the classroom to improve student performance and prepare students for a world where technology and technological advances move quickly.

“Education and advancement in technology are key to fostering economic growth and maintaining our outstanding quality of life in North Dakota,” Hoeven said. “The Qwest Classroom Technology Grant Program is a great opportunity for our educators to find innovative ways to bring technology into the classroom and better prepare our students to succeed.”

"From Qwest's perspective, education is a critical aspect of North Dakota's future,” said North Dakota Qwest President Scott Macintosh. “We're proud to be able to recognize outstanding teachers with these grants."

The grants will be awarded to teachers through a competitive grant process similar to other grant programs administered by the ND Educational Technology Council. Grant application information will be available October 13, 2006, on the ND ETC website www.ndetc.k12.nd.us/index.html. Applications will be due December 1, 2006, and grant recipients will be notified December 15, 2006.

The Qwest Foundation’s core principle is that investing in people and communities provides lasting value for the future. The Qwest Foundation awards grants to community-based programs that generate high-impact and measurable results, focusing on K-12 education and economic development.

“Thanks to the Qwest Foundation we will be able to reward teachers who are finding new and creative ways to use technology in the classroom,” said Dan Pullen, director of the ND Educational Technology Council.
