Hoeven Announces 2006-2007 Governor's Band And Chorus

BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today announced that the Lakota High School Band and the Bismarck High School Concert Choir have been selected the 2006-2007 Governor’s Official State Band and Chorus.

“The Lakota High School Band and the Bismarck High School Concert Choir are two very impressive organizations that will represent the state of North Dakota with pride and enthusiasm,” Hoeven said. “As Governor’s Band and Chorus, they are a testament to the outstanding musical talent that exists in schools and communities across our state.”

The Lakota High School Band is comprised of 46 students from grades 9-12, and is under the direction of Ken Hoerth, an Ashley native who has served as music director in Lakota for the past 30 years. The band performs at school functions, including concerts and sporting events, and for community activities such as Memorial Day services. Band members have consistently received star ratings on a state and regional level, and in 2002 and 2004, the Lakota Music Department was selected by the American Music Conference as one of the 100 top places to live in America for quality music education.

The Bismarck High School Concert Choir, under the direction of Michael Seil, is an auditioned group of 100 voices that performs five concerts annually, as well as participates in various community events throughout the year. Choir members have consistently been selected for various state and regional honor choirs and have received star ratings and “Best of the Room” honors at state and regional music competitions. In January 2005, the Bismarck High School Concert Choir was one of five choirs selected by audition to perform at the North Dakota American Choral Directors Association’s Showcase Concert. The choir recently auditioned to perform the Star Spangled Banner at a Red Sox baseball game next May when they travel to Boston on tour.

The Governor’s Band and Chorus were selected from applications submitted by school and civic groups from across the state based on musical talent, achievement and community involvement. The band and chorus will perform at the opening ceremony of the 2007 Legislative Session January 3, and may be invited to perform at other official state functions held throughout the year.
