Hoeven Meets With Interior Secretary Kempthorne On Elk Management Plan

BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven Monday met with Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne to press for an elk management plan in Theodore Roosevelt National Park using qualified volunteers to cull the herd, rather than paid sharpshooters, euthanasia, fertility controls or other methods proposed by the U.S. Park Service. Hoeven pressed for a plan favored by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, which would entail a controlled hunt by qualified sportsmen and women supervised by wildlife officials.

“Sec. Kempthorne will work with Park Service officials to determine if we can implement our plan under existing rules,” Hoeven said. “We’ll work with his office, our Game and Fish officials and the Park Service to provide all the information they need. We’ll do whatever’s necessary to implement a sensible management plan consistent with North Dakota’s values and heritage.”

Tuesday Meetings

Hoeven meets later today with Ken Krieg, Under Secretary of Defense and Michael Aimone, Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Installations and Mission Support. Aimone is the Air Force lead for a study which is looking at North Dakota as a test site to determine the feasibility and costs associated with the production of jet fuel from coal.

The Governor will also meet today with U.S.D.A. Sec. Mike Johanns and White House agriculture advisor Hunter Moorhead.
