Hoeven Announces 2007 National Youth Science Camp Representatives

BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven announced today that Landon Luick, a senior at Fairmount High School, and Andrew Sand, a senior at Jamestown High School, have been selected by the Coalition for Conservation and Environmental Education as two of the state’s most promising young scientific leaders. They will represent North Dakota as delegates at the National Youth Science Camp in West Virginia this summer.

“Landon and Andrew represent North Dakota’s promising young scientists and future leaders,” Hoeven said. “This camp will provide them with a unique opportunity to exchange ideas with academic and corporate professionals, while broadening their knowledge and interest in science and the environment.”

Luick plans to major in mechanical engineering. He is a graduate of the North Dakota Governor’s School, a member of the National Honor Society and has maintained a 4.0 GPA in high school. He is active in many school academic and athletic activities, as well as numerous community organizations.

Sand plans to pursue a PhD in chemistry with a career at the university level. He is a member of the National Honor Society, a graduate of the North Dakota Governor’s School and is active in the Science Olympiad and Science Bowl both at the state and national level.  He has received numerous math and science honors and is involved with the American Cancer Society and the Boy Scouts.

Each year, 102 student delegates, two from each state and the District of Columbia, are invited to participate in the National Youth Science Camp. The four-week forum allows delegates an opportunity to exchange ideas with leading scientists and other professionals from the academic and corporate worlds. Lectures and hands-on research projects are presented by scientists from across the United States involving topics such as fractal geometry, the human genome project, global climate change, the fate of our rain forests, and robotics.

The National Youth Science Camp’s diverse academic program is complemented by an outdoor recreation program that offers backpacking, caving, rock climbing, mountain biking and kayaking. Luick and Sand were selected from several student applicants from across North Dakota.
