Hoeven Signs Tribal College Financial Assistance Bill

BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. John Hoeven today was joined by legislators, educators and tribal community officials to sign House Bill 1395, a $700,000 financial assistance package to help tribal colleges defray the cost of non-tribal students. The funding will provide $4,581 for each non-native student on a full-time equivalent basis.

“This is good for the tribal schools, and good for students,” Hoeven said. “These dollars are an investment in our workforce and our future.”

“The passage and signing of HB 1395 by Governor Hoeven is a major step in North Dakota history in assuring student access and success for Non-Native students who attend the North Dakota Tribal Colleges,” said Dr. David Gipp, president of the United Tribes Technical College. “It will make a difference as to whether these student can complete their quest for education.  Moreover, it is a recognition and support for those students who plan to stay in North Dakota.  Some 85 percent of these students are estimated to remain in their communities or the state.”

Bill sponsors include Rep. Jim Kasper; Rep. Tracy Boe; Rep. Dawn Charging; Rep. Dennis Johnson; Sen. Tim Flakoll; and Sen. Rich Wardner.

North Dakota’s tribal colleges include: Cankdeska Cikana (Little Hoop) Community College; Fort Berthold Community College; Sitting Bull College; Turtle Mountain Community College; and United Tribes Technical College.
