Hoeven Presses NWA To Ensure Adequate Service At Bismarck International Airport

BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. John Hoeven spoke with Northwest Airlines officials to stress the need to maintain adequate service at Bismarck International Airport. The company today announced a decision to scale back temporarily the number of seats available from Bismarck for three weeks next month.

Northwest has notified the state that it plans to replace its Airbus 319 aircraft in Bismarck with regional jets between August 1 and August 20. The move reflects a 4 percent reduction in operations nationwide for the month of August owing to a pilot shortage. According to Hoeven, company officials said larger jet service will be restored to the airport by August 31.

“With airline boardings in Bismarck up by 7 percent last year alone, Northwest needs to maintain and increase current airline seating capacity to support the economic growth we’re seeing in Bismarck and across the state,” Hoeven said. “Air travelers, especially business travelers, must have reliable, affordable service when they need it. Northwest needs to make every effort to maintain reasonable service and pricing for the benefit of North Dakota and the airline. We will work to continue growth in the North Dakota air travel market over the long term.”
