Hoeven: New Ethanol Labels To Appear On North Dakota Pumps

BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. John Hoeven today was joined by Sen. Joel Heitkamp, Rep. Craig Headland and representatives of the Ethanol Promotion Information Council (EPIC) and North Dakota Corn Growers to highlight a new law requiring the EPIC “e” pump label at all ethanol pumps in the state. The law went into effect on August 1.

“We're increasing production of ethanol at a strong pace, and it's important to increase public awareness of its benefits through our marketing efforts as well,” Hoeven, said. “Enhanced ethanol production is a win for our farmers and rural areas, and a win for our economy.”

“It’s encouraging to see industry and state government working closely together for a product that is so important for our country,” said Tom Slunecka, the executive director of the Ethanol Promotion Information Council. The information that is transferred to consumers through this label allows them the ability to choose, and choice is what makes this country the greatest country on Earth.”

EPIC will make the new labels available, free of charge, to retailers throughout the state. The labels are part of an effort to create a common label for ethanol pumps throughout the nation. Through increased use of the labels, consumers will easily be able to identify ethanol pumps everywhere that fuel is sold.

During the last legislative session, Governor Hoeven worked with legislators and industry leaders to enact a $42 million renewable energy package. In addition to the ethanol pump labeling requirements, the package includes the continuation of the $7.3 million Governor’s Ethanol Production Incentive Fund, a $5 million fund to help finance the building of new ethanol and Biodiesel plants in the state, a $3 million renewable energy research fund and a $2.2 million sales and use tax exemption for materials used to construct co-generation power plants in conjunction with value added agriculture projects.
