Hoeven Calls For Nominations For Congressional Medal Of Honor Society's Above and Beyond Award

BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. John Hoeven is calling on North Dakotans to nominate fellow citizens for the Above and Beyond Citizen Honors Award, a distinguished civilian honor awarded by the national Congressional Medal of Honor Society. The Governor is encouraging citizens to nominate deserving members of their community – colleagues, family and friends who have gone “Above and Beyond” to make a difference in the lives of people around them by putting “Service before Self.”

The non-partisan Above and Beyond Citizen Honors Award recognizes and honors three civilian Americans every year who have made a difference in the lives of others through a singular act of extraordinary heroism, or through their continued commitment to putting others before themselves, without regard for personal gain. One nominee from each of the 50 states will be selected and entered as a finalist, and all 50 will receive a Congressional Medal of Honor Society Medallion of Nomination. Three of the nominees will be selected for the national award.

The Congressional Medal of Honor Society is solely comprised of 109 living Medal of Honor recipients. Former Presidents George H.W. Bush and William Jefferson Clinton are co-chairs of the initiative, and former Secretary of State Colin Powell is the spokesman. On March 25, 2008, National Medal of Honor Day, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society will present the awards during a live event hosted by NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. and broadcast to the nation on March 30th.

Potential nominees may have already been honored in some capacity for their extraordinary deeds – this does not exclude them from being nominated for the Above and Beyond Citizen Honor. Above and Beyond is a platform for such outstanding citizens to be acknowledged on a national stage.

Nominations for the Above and Beyond Citizen Honors can be submitted by filling out an online nomination form at www.aboveandbeyond365.com. All nominations must be received by December 16th, 2007, in order to be considered. Additional information can be found at www.cmohs.org.
