Hoeven Statement On The U.S. Senate's Passage Of The 2007 Farm Bill Today

BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. John Hoeven issued the following statement today in response to the U.S. Senate’s passage of the 2007 Farm Bill:

“The U.S. Senate today passed its version of the 2007 Farm Bill, which includes many of the features we have lobbied for with both Congress and the Administration.

“It includes a good commodity title with a countercyclical safety net for our producers and a permanent disaster title to give farmers and ranchers additional planting security. In addition, the bill raises loan rates and target prices for wheat, barley, soybeans and other oilseeds, and includes forward looking renewable energy and conservation titles that we have pushed for.

“There is more work to do, however. The bill now moves to a joint conference committee, where both U.S. Senate and House members will reconcile the House and Senate versions of the bill into finished legislation. Throughout the process, we will continue to work for the priorities important for North Dakota farmers and ranchers.”

Hoeven is aggressively lobbying congressional leaders and White House officials in support of the Farm Bill. This week, he drafted a letter to Senate leadership (456kb pdf) signed by 21 governors urging swift passage of the legislation. His office also contacted the office of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to urge limiting the number of amendments to the Senate bill in order to make final passage easier.
