Hoeven Directs State Resources To Assist Mandan After Gas Leak

BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today authorized North Dakota state resources, including the Highway Patrol, the National Guard, the Department of Emergency Services and the Department of Health to assist the city of Mandan as Montana Dakota Utilities and city and county officials work to address a natural gas leak that occurred sometime before 6 a.m. today.

Hoeven spoke earlier today with Mandan Mayor Ken Lamont, as well as other city and MDU officials to offer support to the community. According to MDU officials, the leak is repaired, but more than 5,000 residents will be without gas for home heating until utility workers can restart the system. The company is bringing up to 100 service professionals into the city from a four state region.

State resources deployed to help residents include:

  • The North Dakota National Guard has identified 200 space heaters to assist residents until gas is restored. They are currently en route to Mandan and should arrive this evening.
  • The North Dakota Highway Patrol is assisting Mandan Police with additional patrols.
  • The North Dakota Department of Health is providing supplies out of the state medical cache, like privacy screening for the shelter.
  • The Department of Emergency Services has six staff coordinating resources and response.

State and local officials have also worked with the Red Cross to establish a shelter at the Mandan Eagles Club at 1400 Collins Ave.
