Hoeven Declares Fire Emergency For Dry Counties
Fire Emergency - Executive Order 2008-1
(591kb pdf)
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today issued a fire emergency declaration for all counties in the state that declare a fire emergency at the county level. These counties are generally located in the western two-thirds of the state. Hoeven’s executive order places all state agencies and administrators on high levels of readiness.
Thirty-three counties to date have declared fire emergencies, burn bans or other fire restrictions in response to dry conditions, warm temperatures and high winds, particularly in western North Dakota. State and local authorities have responded to a number of significant fires in recent weeks in several counties.
Last weekend, Hoeven mobilized state resources to help local authorities fight fires in Ward and Burke counties, which are all included in the declaration. He sent two National Guard Black Hawk helicopters with dump buckets and Department of Transportation water tankers to assist firefighters in Minot. The Highway Patrol assisted local authorities with traffic and communication in both Burke and Ward counties, and the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services worked to coordinate resources and response.
