Governor Helps Secure $5 Million From FEMA For New Northwood School
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven and the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services (NDDES) today announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as agreed to fund $5 million for the Northwood School. Hoeven spoke this morning with FEMA Region VIII director Garry Briese. The facility will replace the school that was damaged as a result of the F-4 tornado that tracked through the town last August.
"This is good news for Northwood," Hoeven said. "It will help the community move on, and build a modern facility for educating their children."
The estimated total for rebuilding the school is more than $14 million. The State Fire and Tornado Fund under the N.D. Insurance Department has reimbursed $7.6 million for loss of the existing school, with FEMA providing $5 million, which is 75 percent of the total uninsured cost of the project. Of the balance, the state covers ten percent, and the school district fifteen percent.
"This was a tough storm that had a dramatic impact on the people and community of Northwood," Hoeven said. "This FEMA assistance, along with funds that the state is providing, will help to put its school and its community and back on their feet."
