Hoeven Urges President To Sign Farm Bill
Senate Passes Farm Bill With Strong Bipartisan Majority
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today faxed a letter to President George W. Bush urging him to reconsider his intention to veto the new Farm Bill and sign it into law. Following is the complete text of the letter:
“Mr. President, now that the Farm Bill has passed both houses of Congress with strong bipartisan support, I urge you to sign this important piece of legislation for the American people.
“The new Farm Bill includes a price safety net for farmers and ranchers who produce the nation’s food supply, but it also contains more dollars for important nutrition programs, including support for school lunch programs, food banks and food stamps. In fact, 73.5 percent of authorized funding will go to help feed children, the elderly, and the poor.
“Other important programs in the legislation support renewable energy to promote greater energy security; conservation measures to help safeguard our environment; funding to help revitalize our rural communities; and agricultural research to help our farmers and ranchers be more productive and profitable.
“Mr. President, I urge you to sign this bill.”
