North Dakota's First Lady To Head NGA Spouses' Group
BISMARCK, N.D. - North Dakota's First Lady Mikey L. Hoeven was named chair of the National Governors Association (NGA) Spouses' Leadership Committee during the recent NGA Annual Meeting in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Mrs. Hoeven was elected by her peers to serve as chair of the NGA spouses' group for a one-year term. During the upcoming program year, she plans to focus attention on wellness and health prevention issues.
As first lady, Mrs. Hoeven focuses her attention on issues affecting women and children in her state. She is a strong advocate of underage drinking prevention and launched a statewide advertising campaign in 2001 to help raise awareness about this problem and to empower young people to say no to alcohol. The first lady is co-chair of Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free, a national coalition of governors' spouses that works to combat drinking among children ages 9–15. She also serves on the Governor's Prevention Advisory Council on Drugs and Alcohol.
Mrs. Hoeven is also deeply committed to women's health concerns, and she hosts two annual statewide women's health summits which feature speakers who are renowned at the state and national levels.
Founded in 1908, NGA is the collective voice of the nation's governors and one of Washington, D.C.'s most respected public policy organizations. Its members are the governors of the 50 states, three territories and two commonwealths.
