Mark A. Nelson
Superintendent, North Dakota Highway Patrol
Colonel Mark Nelson was appointed superintendent of the North Dakota Highway Patrol by Gov. John Hoeven in August 2007. A native of St. James, Minnesota, Nelson began his career with the Highway Patrol in 1981 as a trooper in Rolla and Devils Lake. In July 1989, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and served as district sergeant in Dickinson, and in July 1996, was promoted to captain and served as district commander in Grand Forks. In March 2002, he was promoted to major and appointed field operations commander serving at the Patrol's headquarters in Bismarck.
Nelson received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice in 2002 from Park University in Parkville, Missouri, and in 1991, graduated from the Northwestern University Traffic Institute's School of Police Staff and Command.
